Poem 014
The mountain keeps its secrets under snow,
Where frozen rivers sleep and currents slow,
Yet underneath the white and brittle ground,
The pulse of something living can be found.
No cheering crowd will witness what takes place,
No eager eyes will measure every trace,
But patient roots continue their descent,
As though the darkness were a place well meant.
Then through the frost, a slender form appears,
Untroubled by the weight of passing years,
And teaches us, before it disappears,
That strength can wear the gentlest face it bears.
