Poem 017
Within an attic chest of oak,
There rests a letter no one spoke,
Its paper yellowed, folded tight,
Its ink grown faint beneath the night,
Its meaning hidden by the smoke.
The house has changed through passing years,
Its halls have swallowed countless tears,
Yet still the little chest remains,
Untouched beneath the windowpanes,
While dust conceals what no one hears.
Perhaps a curious hand will turn
The rusted lock and let it burn,
Releasing words that once were dear,
A voice preserved from another year,
Or leave the sleeping past to yearn.
The beauty of poetry lies in its ability to be open to multiple meanings. Keep your thoughts to yourself or share them here - I'd love to hear how this poem resonates with you.
