Poem 031
The seed did not know what the gardener planned,
She buried it deep in the cold, quiet land,
She pictured one flower with petals of red,
And waited through winter above its dark bed.
But spring brought a stem she had never foreseen,
With leaves unlike any she'd pictured in green,
It opened at dawn with a color of flame,
And nothing about it resembled the same.
She could have called failure the shape it had grown,
Could have wished for the flower she'd already known,
Instead she knelt down in the warm morning rain,
And marveled at beauty she couldn't explain.
